Huot students build tiny homes with financing support from MVSB

LACONIA — Since 2017, the students of the Huot Technical Center in Laconia have partnered with the Lakes Region Builders and Remodelers Association to build a tiny home from ground up each year. The homes average 400 square feet in size and feature most of the expected utilities and features one would find in a larger home.

Students are involved in every aspect of the process – from learning to read the floor plans to installing finishing touches like lighting and appliances. All construction is done at the Huot, where students are supplied with all the tools and materials needed, some of which are donated by local businesses.

“Throughout the year, students learn wood working, insulation, plumbing, electrical, painting, and more from volunteers with decades of building experience,” said Treasurer for the Lakes Region Builders and Remodelers Association Bob Glassett. “It provides challenging, hands-on experience and the students always feel proud of the finished product when we reveal it each spring. They always do a great job.”

The organization worked with Tate Miller, MVSB commercial loan officer, to finance this year’s project and, as in years past, the home will be sold to support the program and help to fund future tiny home projects at the school.

Why tiny homes?

Glassett said there is a market for tiny homes and buyers often use them as an affordable starter house, a guest house or as an accessory dwelling. Building a home at this scale also gives students the opportunity to experience all aspects of the process right on site at the Huot.

Through the program, students learn trade skills they can apply toward a career and businesses often reach out looking for students they can possibly hire after graduation.

“Companies are becoming familiar with the projects we are working on and the level of skills that these students can acquire,” said Glassett. “There is definitely a need for a workforce with a strong foundation that are willing to continue to grow and learn in this industry. We have seen many students from this program go on to further their education and find successful careers in the industry.”

Funding and selling the home

Glassett said they have two homes to sell this year. They each have standard appliances and features, including radiant heat and vinyl plank flooring. Proceeds from the sale of the homes will support the purchase of materials for the next year’s project.

“We have been thrilled to have MVSB as partner since the beginning seven year ago,” said Glassett. “It was great to work with Tate, who provided guidance and local expertise on the funding process. This peace of mind gives the students and instructors the ability to turn their focus on building a quality house with all the proper tools and equipment.”
