To The Daily Sun,

Laconia’s voters spoke clearly: a new mayor and two new council members are coming. In less than six weeks, these representatives will be sworn in, carrying the voice of those who elected them. Yet the outgoing administration is rushing through controversial changes. We’re seeing everything from restructuring the Human Relations Committee and appointing board members, to advancing zoning and building code overrides under the banner of “development” or “betterment.” And early long-term contract extensions.

These officials were rejected by the will of the people, yet they still wield the power of their seats. While legally their authority remains until their terms expire, the ethical issues are undeniable. Why should long‑term policy decisions such as locking in land‑use changes or staffing committees with loyalists be made by those who no longer represent the voters’ mandate?

The risks are real, both fiscal and ethical. Ordinances rammed through in these final weeks can be disruptive for the incoming leadership to reverse. They saddle the new mayor and council with obligations the citizens never supported or debated fully. When residents see their carefully cast votes discounted by a last‑minute rush to cement an old agenda, public trust is violated.

Laconia deserves a transition defined by transparency, restraint and respect for the ballot box. Outgoing officials should limit their focus to routine governance, leaving major policy decisions to those who will soon be accountable to the people. Anything less is a disservice to Laconia and its taxpayers.
