MANCHESTER — The state Department of Corrections is looking for an escaped inmate with a lengthy criminal record, including a previous escape conviction.

Robert L. Clayton, 53, is currently serving time for robbery as a minimum-security inmate, with a release date by Aug. 5, 2028. Clayton allegedly never returned from work release on Friday, and NH DOC has now placed him on escaped status.

Clayton is listed at 5' 7", weighing 206 pounds, with brown eyes and short gray hair. He was last seen leaving the transitional housing unit, Calumet House, for work at about 3 a.m.

Clayton was scheduled to return to Calumet House at 5 p.m., but never arrived. He was last seen wearing a blue winter coat with a white stripe on the sleeve, and blue jeans and white sneakers.

Clayton has 17 felony charges to his name, as well as two misdemeanor charges, according to information provided by Jane Graham, public information officer for NH DOC.

This is also not the first time Clayton has escaped from Calumet House. In 2016, he left the facility, and was found three days later in Auburn. He has been in the state prison system since 2007, and had previous sentences for kidnapping and resisting arrest.

According to information provided by NH DOC, Clayton was charged with four counts of kidnapping on Feb. 3, 2006, a felony, and was sentenced to 7.5 to 15 years in prison on Oct. 18, 2007. He received a conviction on the same day for two felony charges of criminal restraint and resisting arrest.

On Feb. 3, 2006, he was also charged with two counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault, and convicted on Oct. 18, and charged with three counts of felony robbery, and on July 29, 2013, sentenced to 2.5 to 15 years of incarceration.

On Feb. 2, 2016, he was charged with felony escape, and convicted on July 29, 2016, for 1-2 years in prison.

Anyone with information about Clayton’s whereabouts can call Chief Investigator Jason Darrah of the NH DOC Investigations Bureau at 603-848-2569, or local police.
