To The Daily Sun,

The state Legislature we have is no friend to education.

Legislators have been squeezing education funding from all sides.

On the revenue side, the state “can’t afford” to fund public education adequately because they have chosen instead to reduce revenue sources. They eliminated the Income and Dividends Tax paid only by people who had money to invest. They reduced taxes paid by businesses that take their profits out of the state and pay it to people who can afford to own shares of their stock.

On the education spending side, legislators would like voters on the November ballot to agree to tax caps. These might make taxpayers feel as if they will be controlling local property taxes, but they will come at the cost of education. (Never mind that we can afford to pay rising costs of school vouchers to private and religious schools.)

We need state representatives who do their homework and know who are paying less taxes and who are paying more. Marcia Hayward is running for state rep. in Belknap County District 5, and she knows and is ready to solve the problem.
