PLYMOUTH — September marks Health Aging Month, and Mid-State Health is joining the national celebration with a reminder: “it’s never too late to reinvent yourself.” This national campaign encourages adults 50 and older to take charge of their well-being, explore new interests, and build habits that support a vibrant, healthy life.

Staying active is one of the most important ways to support healthy aging. At Mid-State Health that doesn’t mean high-impact workouts; the Aquatic Therapy program offers a low-impact, joint-friendly way to build strength, improve flexibility, and relieve chronic pain. The warm-water therapy pool provides a safe and supportive environment that’s ideal for older adults.

Healthy aging goes beyond

physical fitness. Mental stimulation and emotional well-being play just as big a role in feeling your best. New experiences such as exploring a new hiking trail, visiting a local museum, or reading a new book can add excitement to your daily routine. Revisiting old passions, such as gardening or painting and trying something new is another great way to keep the mind sharp.

Social connection is also essential to the aging process, and it’s something that can be easily overlooked. Maintaining friendships and staying socially active can have a major positive impact on mental and emotional well-being. Whether it’s joining a local club, participating in group activities, or simply catching up with a friend over coffee, small social moments can make a big difference.

Nutrition is another foundational piece of the healthy aging process and eating a well-balanced diet becomes even more important for long-term wellness.

As Denise Normandin, registered dietitian at Mid-State Health said, “Nutrition is the foundation of livelihood. Making sure your body has the nutrients it needs can go a long way in staying revitalized and supporting longevity.” Mid-State’s nutrition services are available to help create a personalized sustainable plan.

Finally, it’s important to recognize emotional health is just as important as physical health. Aging often brings life changes, from retirement to caregiving responsibilities to health challenges, that can lead to stress or anxiety. Mid-State Health’s Behavioral Health services offer support and strategies to help individuals navigate these transitions with confidence and resilience.

This Healthy Aging Month, Mid-State Health encourages older adults in the community to embrace this stage of life with energy, curiosity, and self-compassion. For more information, visit midstatehealth.org.
