The Laconia Professional Firefighters Local-1153 has adapted their own challenge coins, each side featuring a custom-made insignia representing Lakes Region geography, intended to raise funds for the department. The coins are 1.75 inches in diameter. Challenge coins are said to have originated in the military during World War I, as a way to foster camaraderie, with service members "challenging" others to show their coin as a token of their service. The tradition of carrying the coins eventually spread to firefighters and other first responders. For more information about Laconia's challenge coins, email laconiafirefighters@gmail.com.
