To The Daily Sun,
The recent letter urging the community to "move on" from the Memorial Day controversy misses the point. This was never about a pair of blue jeans. It was about accountability, honesty, and respect for one of our nation's most solemn observances.
I agree that the fundraiser benefiting Operation Delta Dog was a positive outcome. Supporting veterans is always commendable. But a successful fundraiser does not change the facts surrounding what occurred on Memorial Day.
The mayor was invited in advance by American Legion Post 1, was listed on the official program, and participated as mayors traditionally do at Memorial Day ceremonies. Suggesting he simply spoke spontaneously created a false narrative that deserved to be corrected. Facts matter, especially when they are used to deflect legitimate criticism.
Citizens have every right to expect elected officials to demonstrate respect through both their conduct and their representation of the office they hold. Raising those expectations is not engaging in "culture wars" or harboring resentment. It is exercising civic responsibility.
No one is arguing that attire is more important than housing, taxes, or public safety. We are saying that leadership is measured not only by policy but also by judgment, accountability, and respect for the traditions that honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The discussion should end when the record is accurate—not simply because some are tired of hearing about it.
