Lakeport resident Steve Fay, center left, and Mariko Yamasaki, second from left, both of the U.S. Forest Service, led a field trip recently for Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH), second from right, to the Bartlett Experimental Forest in Bartlett. Bartlett is one of 57 experimental forests across the country slated for closure by the secretary of agriculture, and is now on the further study list thanks to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte. Research on forestry and wildlife has taken place there since 1931, producing over 500 publications by Forest Service scientists and many collaborators. The findings on northern hardwood forests are used throughout northern New England by public and private landowners, and contribute to forest health and productivity and the forest economy. Pappas and Rep. Maggie Goodlander (D-NH) recently filed legislation to block Secretary Brooke Rollins from implementing the closures without the consent of Congress. Goodlander had a similar tour. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, in Thornton, has been removed from the closure list. Also pictured, from left, are Georgia Murray, Mike Morin, and Matt Leahy. (Courtesy photo)
