GILFORD - The young Sanbornton woman who is awaiting trial on charges she drove two burglars around numerous Lakes Region communities while they stole tens of thousands of dollars of electronics, money and jewelry from private homes is in trouble again, this time in Gilford.
New charges being faced by Natalie Godbout, 18, of 671 Hunkins Pond Road are one count each of theft by deception and receiving stolen property for allegedly shoplifting some things from Hannafords Supermarket and returning them for gift cards.
This spring she was indicted by a Belknap County grand jury for 19 felony counts of being an accomplice to burglary. Last week two of her alleged accomplices, Stephen Deagle and Joshua Levesque pleaded guilty to 19 and 21 counts respectively of burglary. They were each sentenced to two to nine years in the N.H. State Prison.
Gilford Police allege Godbout now has a new accomplice — Christopher Caruso, 18, 11 Sonnet Drive in Dover.
Caruso is free on $25,000 cash bail and is awaiting trial in Rockingham Superior Court for aggravated felonious sexual assault. He is accused of repeated raping an 11-year-old girl over a six month period ending with his arrest in March. According to an account written in the Portsmouth Herald, Caruso is described by Portsmouth police Capt. Corey MacDonald as "a danger to the community."
In her affidavit submitted to Laconia District Court Monday morning, Gilford Police Officer Holly Harris said Godbout and Caruso were seen mid afternoon on July 24 on a Hannafords security tape allegedly stealing two packages of Sylvania Super Saver Light Bulbs, one bottle of Hannafords Childrens Chewable Vitamins and one bottle of Flintstone Sour Gummies.
The two allegedly left the store and went to a car Godbout was driving — one registered to her former alleged accomplice Levesque — where Caruso allegedly changed shirts.
Police said the tape showed he returned to the store and went to the service desk where he exchanged the light bulbs for a gift card. The tape shows Godbout allegedly doing the same thing with the vitamins and the gummies.
After completing her investigation, a judge issued an arrest warrant for both Godbout and Caruso and, with the assistance of the Sanbornton Police, the two were arrested at Godbout's home on Hunkins Pond Sunday afternoon.
They were processed and freed on personal recognizance bail.
Belknap County Attorney Jim Carroll said Monday he would petition the Superior Court for a review of Godbout's bail conditions as they relate to her previous accusations of accomplice to burglary.
