LACONIA — Middle school principal Aaron Hayward is back at work following a brief leave of absence during an internal review, according to communications sent by the superintendent to parents on Tuesday.

“I’m actually back in the building today and will refer all other questions to the SAU office,” Hayward wrote Wednesday when reached for comment.

Interim Superintendent Amy Hinds confirmed Wednesday Hayward had returned to his position as principal of Laconia Middle School.

“The district has completed its internal review, and Principal Hayward has resumed his duties effective Wednesday, Oct. 15,” Hinds wrote Wednesday when asked about the outcome of the review.

In the letter to parents and guardians, Hinds asked readers to keep in mind an internal review is a standard and neutral process designed to allow the school district time to evaluate concerns that have come to their attention.

“This step helps ensure that all matters are considered thoroughly, objectively, and with fairness to everyone involved,” the letter reads.

The matter is confidential, so Hinds was not able to share additional information, she wrote.

“I appreciate your understanding, patience, and continued trust as we move forward with a process that places equal importance on fairness and the well-being of our students,” the letter continued.

School board Chair LaToya Beck-Brown said board members received the same letter distributed to families and staff regarding what she described as a personnel matter.

Hayward was placed on administrative leave pending an internal review on Oct. 6. District leaders declined to comment on the basis for the review.

The letter sent to parents and guardians last week described the review as a “precautionary and neutral” step, not represent a disciplinary finding.

While Hayward was under review, he was placed on administrative leave, and Interim Assistant Superintendent Lisa Hinds, no relation, served as acting principal of Laconia Middle.

“Because this is a confidential matter, I cannot share additional details,” the first letter from Amy Hinds read, in part. “I appreciate your understanding and trust as we move forward with a process that prioritizes both fairness and student well-being.”

Beck-Brown said last week Hayward’s administrative leave took effect on the morning of Oct. 6, and since it was a personnel matter, no other information could be shared.

It’s not clear if Hayward was on paid or unpaid leave.

Amy Hinds directed questions to the district office at 603-524-5710.

Hayward was hired to serve as principal at the middle school in 2023, having previously served on the school board from 2016 to 2022, and as chair of that board for his final year. He worked in the Shaker School District for 20 years, including three years as principal at Belmont High School.
