The New Hampshire Army National Guard airlifted an injured hiker from the Bondcliff Trail in the remote Pemigewasset Wilderness of the White Mountain National Forest.
Scott Bailey, a 66-year-old from Plymouth, spent the night of May 27 at the Guyot Shelter, a nearby lean-to. On May 28, he slipped and fell down a steep section of the trail as he was leaving, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials.
Bailey was able to text 911 around 11:53 a.m. to tell rescuers he suffered a leg injury that made him unable to get down on his own.
With the coordinates provided by 911, it was discovered that Bailey was about 7.5 miles away from the trailhead.
Due to his remote location, the New Hampshire Army National Guard in Concord was contacted to airlift the hiker by helicopter. By 1:30 p.m., the crew located Bailey and airlifted him to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment of his injury, Fish and Game reported.
