Eliza Leadbeater shared this image of the U.S. Mailboat Sophie C. at the Bear Island dock delivering mail on the 80th anniversary of the ship’s launch on Aug. 14, with Captain David at the helm. She wrote, “The vessel was launched on V-J Day in 1945 at Center Harbor for the sole purpose of being a shuttle service between Wolfeboro and The Weirs while the M/S Mount Washington was awaiting re-commissioning. The vessel, in 1969, assumed the role of providing full postal services to 10 islands north of The Weirs, which is its home port. Prior to Sophie C.’s commissioning, there were eight mailboats operating on the lake starting in 1892.”

The event showcases the process of planting and growing flax, which once spun is known as linen. A retting pond on the property dates back to Colonial times. After the flax is spun into linen yarn, it is woven, as pictured here.

While at the 46th Annual Loon Festival at Moultonborough’s Loon Center on July 19, Meredith resident Sharon E. Ryan and her husband got up close and personal with live animals, including this little, hand-sized owl, courtesy of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. “There was much to be learned from reading posters on such topics as loons and the man-made nests, to watching the live loon cam. Also, craft tables were available for kids. It was a good day, everyone was having a good time,” Ryan wrote.

There was a white flat raft, run by a human pulley system, used as a shuttle from land to the rafts in Meredith Bay and back. Many folks were in the park watching the event. Also, there were activities made for children to help occupy their time. It was a nice day for everyone and all for a good cause," Ryan wrote.

The male and female cardinal work together to build nests, raise young, and defend their territory. Feeding their mate helps strengthen the pair bond. It may also serve as a part of mating behavior, with the male offering the female food as a courtship display. This feeding reinforces the social bond between the mated pair," Gumpp wrote.
