Well, on the one hand, at least David Tennant and Michael Sheen‘s characters end up together at the end of Good Omens finale? But fans are sure to be divided on how they feel about exactly how that happens. Warning: Spoilers for the Good Omens finale ahead!
In order to give humanity the chance they deserve, former demon Crowley (Tennant) and angel Aziraphale (Sheen) decide to sacrifice themselves so God (Tanya Moodie) creates a world without angels, demons, God, or Satan. And that means they cease to exist. Their goodbye is short and sweet — Aziraphale kisses his fingers and puts them to Crowley’s lip, and Crowley kisses them — and then that’s it … for those versions of the actors’ characters.
But David Tennant and Michael Sheen’s new characters, Professor Anthony Crowley and bookseller Asa, meet in the new world. Their meet-cute leads to a date and then, 20 years later, a happily ever after, married, together, living in a cottage in the South Downs.
But this does mean that Aziraphale and Crowley don’t get a happily ever after. The versions of their characters who are human don’t have the long history that the angel and former demon did. They had to sacrifice being together to give humanity free will. And in these new lives, they’ll have limited time together because humans die, whereas as an angel and former demon, they would’ve kept living.
But, as director Rachel Talalay told TV Insider, it does show that “love conquers all, and any place in any universe, it’s not about the humanity as much as the feeling that they would, if it’s ineffable, find that kind of love, they would find each other no matter what.”
She added that the finale was about “the greatness of that eternity of love … and that no matter what universe they will find each other and they will always be together, whether it’s limited in this universe or parallel universes, or they will always — that kind of love endures is the point of it.”
