On Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. Mike “Mad Dog” Gallagher, a 38-year-old cyclist, began his attempt to ride a “spinning” stationary bike for 48 consecutive hours to raise money for the WLNH Children’s Christmas Auction. The 48 Hour Cycle Mania event is taking place at Laconia Athletic and Swim Club.
A former member of Team Michelin, a mountain bike-racing program, Gallagher is no stranger to Cycle Mania. Last year, the Mad Dog cycled for 36 consecutive hours for the children’s auction. “I’m excited to be back in the saddle, literally, I love the challenge and it’s for a great cause,” Gallagher said.
Fourteen relay teams of more than 350 riders will accompany Gallagher during his 48-hour bike trek. “This is where courage and community come together for those in need”, said Tom Oakley, Director of the 4th Annual Cycle Mania.
Many area businesses donate their products and services to the organizers of the event. More than 300 volunteers are needed to run Cycle Mania.
“If you have never seen an extreme endurance effort, well you’re in for a treat! It’s quite inspirational, especially during the Christmas season. This is the ultimate gift of giving,” said Oakley.
The swim club is located at 827 North Main Street. For more information call 524-9252 or visit www.lascfit.com.
