NEW HAMPTON — The Dana Meeting House Association will host Timeless Textiles, a day of quilts old and new, at the historic Meeting House in New Hampton on Saturday, July 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This year, organizers have extended the scope of the exhibit to with the participation of textile artist Sara Goodman. She is a weaver, dyer, spinner, stitcher, surface designer and a lover of all things involving color and cloth. Goodman is the lead dye studio instructor at Sanborn Mills Farm in Loudon and was instrumental in the conception and creation of this state-of-the-art teaching facility. She maintains a studio in Center Harbor and is a juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen. For the past 10 years she has taught a beginning weaving class at the League studio in Center Sandwich called Five Warps in Five Days.
At 11:15 a.m., Goodman will talk about her work as a weaver, dyer, designer and teacher, inspired by her wide-ranging travels and her collaborations with local artisans around the world. She will discuss her explorations with shibori, resist dyeing techniques developed centuries ago in Japan. Goodman has designed a collection of handwoven carpets based on her original shibori designs. At 1:30 p.m., Goodman will lead a dyeing demonstration under the tent and invite visitors to try their hand at resist dyeing with indigo.
In addition to the colorful display of traditional and contemporary quilts, there will be a conversation at 10:30 a.m. with Featured Quilter Michelle Plourde of the Belknap Mill Quilt Guild. At noon, Quilt Historian Stephanie Drake will present her analysis of historic quilts. All attendees are invited to bring along a vintage quilt for her to examine. A collection from Carol Dale, fiber artist, will be displayed. The creative quilts and work of many others with be included as well. The New Hampton Historical Society will show period textiles and costumes and other participants will share historic household items of interest. The Kids Corner allows their creation of squares for a group paper quilt.
