Peavey Block

The Wolfeboro Heritage Commission honored the O’Dowd and Avery families with a Wolfeboro Heritage Award in 2024 for 125 years of stewardship of the Peavey Block, now known as the Avery Block, a well-known landmark in downtown Wolfeboro. Over the years, the families have made a strong commitment to maintaining the historic elements of the structure — not just the street view but the other three sides as well. Nominations for the 2025 Heritage Awards are now open. Submissions are due by March 7. (Courtesy photo)

WOLFEBORO — Anyone who owns, or is aware of, a historic property in town they think deserves recognition, or knows someone working to preserve the history of the town or a builder or homeowner who pays special attention to maintaining historic details in their work could be highlighted at the Wolfeboro Heritage Commission's third Wolfeboro Heritage Awards program.

The awards recognize the efforts of individuals, businesses and organizations that have made significant contributions to the preservation of buildings, neighborhoods, traditions and other historic resources in the town. They are presented annually each May.

The awards are given in various categories, including historic building restoration and/or adaptive re-use, stewardship — repair and maintenance — of a historic building over time, and leadership or education efforts. Awards can be made to individuals, groups, businesses and municipal entities.

Anyone can nominate a person, organization, business or project for recognition of their contributions to the knowledge, appreciation, or preservation of Wolfeboro’s built environment. Self-nominations are welcome.

Dave Bolduc, Wolfeboro Heritage Commission chair, said, “The Heritage Commission's purpose is to help the town retain its traditional character by managing change to its historic resources. These awards give us the opportunity to recognize and thank people who have made a positive contribution to the preservation of historic properties in Wolfeboro."

Nomination forms are available on the Wolfeboro Heritage Commission’s homepage at wolfeboronh.us/heritage-commission. The form requires contact information for the nominee, along with a paragraph or more on why they should receive an award. To be considered for an award for restoration, renovation, or stewardship of a building, a building must have been constructed prior to 1972.

Nominations should be submitted by Friday, March 7, and can be emailed to heritagecommission@wolfeboronh.us or mailed to Wolfeboro Heritage Commission, Town Hall, 84 S. Main St., Wolfeboro, NH 03894. For more information on the Wolfeboro Heritage Awards program, email heritagecommission@wolfeboronh.us or call Bolduc at 603-235-4415.

Awards will be made during Historic Preservation Month in May.
