MEREDITH — Next up in the Meredith Historical Society’s 2026 Speaker Series will be a timely program by Dave Emerson of Emerson Aviation, who will describe his experiences calling the day and time when the lake is declared free of ice — and when navigation to the lake’s major ports reopens.

Doors for the Tuesday, May 5, program at the Trinity Church parish hall open at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m.

Dave Emerson is a New Hampshire and Lakes Region native whose parents had roots in Ossipee. He was born in 1962 in Wolfeboro, and his family later moved to Gilford in 1964. David’s father began working at the Laconia Airport in May of 1962, when David was only 5 months old.

Emerson recently made headlines for his determination that Ice-Out 2026 occurred on Sunday, April 12, at 6:59 a.m. Ice-out, Emerson explained in a social media post that morning, is determined when ice would no longer “impede the MS Mt Washington if it were to sail today.” Ports including Meredith, Weirs Beach, Center Harbor, Wolfeboro, and Alton Bay need to be ice free.

David is also a 24-year veteran of the New Hampshire Air National Guard in Portsmouth, retiring in 2004.
