To The Daily Sun,
Newfound's proposal to cut seven teacher positions due to budget constraints is undoubtedly a tough decision, one met with hesitation from students like us who value our educators. However, the suggested alternative, slashing medical staff, is an ill-conceived solution. The upcoming Deliberative Session on Feb. 3, at 10 a.m. at Newfound Regional High School invites attendees to vote on issues like this, and our collective voice can oppose the proposition to cut seven medical positions as an alternative to teacher layoffs.
Under this proposed plan, each school site would be left with only one nurse and one counselor at NRHS and Newfound Memorial Middle School respectively, with Danbury Elementary School, New Hampton Community School, Bridgewater-Hebron Village School and Bristol Elementary School forced to share one nurse and one counselor. Additionally, there would be one district-wide social worker and no psychologist. As a lifelong student of Newfound, I strongly oppose this medical staff reduction strategy. The absence of nurses and counselors at each school site poses significant dangers, particularly in rural areas with lengthy commutes.
If the primary concern is to "save our teachers," it is contradictory to advocate for cutting nurses. This decision places an undue burden on teachers and other school staff, expecting them to handle medical emergencies in addition to their existing responsibilities. Rather than saving teachers, this approach exacerbates their workload, which hinders their ability to provide quality education.
Let us stand together to protect the crucial aspects of our educational system, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for both students and staff. Your participation in the Deliberative Session can make a difference in preserving the educational and health services that are vital to our school community.
