BELMONT — A 7-year-old on a bicycle was taken to the trauma center at Concord Hospital Sunday, after being hit by an alleged drunk driver. The child suffered serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries, including bruises and an injury to the right foot.

The child was riding a bicycle near Ladd Hill Road and Silkworm Avenue at around 2 p.m. on June 28, when 27-year-old Jeremy Sanborn, of Belmont, crashed into them. Sanborn was driving a 2022 Dodge Ram pickup truck. He was not injured in the crash, and after an initial investigation, police charged Sanborn with driving under the influence.

Sanborn will appear for a formal reading of charges at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, in Laconia District Court.

As the summer months kick off, police are reminding residents to take caution in neighborhoods, where children are likely playing.

“The area of Ladd Hill Road, Silkwood Avenue, Cherry Street and Sunshine Drive is a residential area with many families, children and pedestrian activity,” Capt. Evan Boulanger said, according to a press release. “While this investigation remains active, the Belmont Police Department reminds motorists to use extra caution in residential neighborhoods, especially during the summer months when children are more likely to be outside playing, riding bicycles, and walking.”

Driving slowly with the expectation children will be playing near the road, on sidewalks and in driveways is recommended.

Bicyclists are also encouraged to take extra precautions.

“The Belmont Police Department also reminds bicyclists and families to prioritize safety by wearing properly fitted helmets, using appropriate safety equipment, wearing visible clothing, and following bicycle safety practices,” Boulanger said in a press release.

Belmont Fire and Police responded to the accident scene on Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Belmont Police Cpl. Joel Pickowicz at 603-267-8351.
