To The Daily Sun,

It is with sadness I read of the fire that destroyed Kimball Castle. Back in the early 1980s, I was working on the excursion boat M/S Mount Washington and the crew knew the history of the lake. We knew of the two “castles.” One was the Castle in the Clouds, a successful enterprise. The other was the Kimball Castle.

Sadly, nothing came of the latter endeavor. Various plans came and went. Newspapers reported on trespassers. I am surprised Kimball Castle survived this long. And now it is to be razed. Safety concerns and liability require it be removed. This isn’t Europe where old castles are allowed to molder on the hillside as tourist draws.

Which begs the question. What is to be done with the Kimball Castle rubble? That shouldn’t be left in piles either. Again liability. So it too must go.

So I was thinking why not create an artificial island in the lake nearby? Why not in “The Witches” a notorious group of rocks that pose a danger to Lake Winnipesaukee’s many boaters?

Dump the granite rubble rock and create an island. On the island place a beacon. A lighthouse. Protected from the ice movement and lake's storms by the island.

A win-win-win for both memorializing the Kimball Castle, for enhancing public safety, and creating another lake attraction.
