Sheila Kufert: Letter writers are believing lies and changing history

James Veverka’s letter was not worth responding to because it is right out of the Hamas playbook calling the forming of Israel in 1948 as Nakba, catastrophe. Now with two more anti-Israel letters, I responded to all three as the only person defending Israel. Yes, it is a Jewish state even though their non-Jewish citizens have greater rights than they do in many Arab countries, especially women. Jews have no other safe place to live as evidenced by what is going on globally and in America.

Israel was given land, their original homeland, which at the time was desert, when they were escaping the Holocaust. Unlike what the pro-Palestinian side believe, the British did not steal or usurp that land nor were they colonizers. They were just assigned control of it as there were no established countries there at the time. The Ottomans ruled it for 400 years during which there was never a country of Palestine. It was just a general area within the Ottoman empire, just like modern day Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Jews were in the region for almost 2,000 years before Islam even existed. They were conquered and came back repeatedly. The last time was in the Muslim Conquest of the 7th century. It was the Muslims who colonized Judea, which means Land of The Jews, and displaced the Jews to neighboring regions where they were later expelled and came back to Israel. The Muslims built the Al Aqsa Mosque and Dome of The Rock on top of the foundations of the Jewish Temple. Definition of indigenous people, inhabiting or existing in a land from the earliest times or from before the arrival of colonists. That makes the Jews indigenous and the Arabs colonizers.
