Mark Weinreb: Iran's goal since 1979 has been to 'destroy the state of Israel'

Coincidentally, in the same issue’s editorial section, there seem to be a contradiction. One states editorials agreeing with Donald Trump’s unconstitutional pronouncements should not be printed since they are "incorrect" or a "mistate." The other one states that “Israel has the desire to own the land of the Palestinians” which is also a misstatement.

Israel’s goal has always been about self-preservation (not to “own more Palestinian land”). There has never been any historical precedent or military victory that has given the Palestinian Arab people a legal right to any of the territories informally known as "Palestine."

In 1948, the UN attempted to divide the land demographically and give one part a Jewish state and the other parts a “Palestinian” control. However, Arab countries rejected that deal. After failing to militarily defeat Israel, Israel established the borders that were in place until the 1967 war. The Gaza strip was a territory of Egypt, and the “West Bank” (of Jordan) was under Jordanian control. Neither of these countries had any intentions of creating a “Palestinian state” while these territories were in Arabian control. 

In 1967, Israel won the 7-day war, militarily controlling these two territories. Since then, there have been various peace treaties, Israeli administration changes, and military confrontations (including the horrible recent Oct. 7 attacks). However, the goal of Iran, since 1979, has been to “destroy the state of Israel” by creating nuclear weapons, supporting Terrorist organizations throughout the region, and avoiding Peace negotiations with the “Zionist entity.” 

Certain Jewish and non-Jewish people may not agree with the current Israeli administration military tactics, especially being involved in the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza. However, chanting "From the River to Sea” denying Israel's right to exist, doesn't help.
