Leonard Campbell: Let’s turn page on dark period, go back to being neighbors working together

I continue to be perplexed how people can continue to support Donald Trump. A confounding malaise seems to have overcome people that continue to support him. Truth, honor, decency and law carry no value to them. Holding power seems their sole motivation regardless of the cost to our democracy.

Trump incited an insurrection of our government for heaven's sake. He is unable to tell truth from fiction about immigration, the economy, the climate and energy. He cozies up to dictators and criminals. He stages his public appearances but even so, his message is incoherent and spews fear and hate. He denies a connection to Project 2025 but says he’ll place it’s author in his administration.

The Republican majority of our New Hampshire Legislature and Executive Council and our current governor are also caught up in this sickness. The slate of Republican candidates across NH has decided it is in their interest to stand behind Trump and pursue extreme libertarianism rather than addressing the problems we face. NH as well as the whole country has too many pressing problems including access to health care, providing quality public education, protecting bodily autonomy, ensuring civil liberties and rights, building affordable housing, addressing the climate crisis and conserving our environmental resources to name a few that must be addressed. But Republicans refuse to even discuss them. All they do is utter tired old slogans about taxes and accuse their Democratic opponents and anyone who dares to differ of being Marxists or communists. Really?

Let’s turn the page on this dark period and go back to being neighbors and citizens who work together.
