Laurie Jordan: Schools need to hold assembly on bullying on 1st day

I was at a family birthday party recently, talking to a young relative, who will be entering high school in the Newfound district. He told me that he was terrified to go to high school, due to the fact that he and some other students were being bullied all through middle school. He said they reported it multiple times, but instead of stopping, it escalated. He said, so far, it was only verbal, but in high school, he is afraid it may turn physical. I contacted his mother; she said he never told her, nor did the school.

Schools may say they have a zero tolerance policy on bullying, but obviously their policies aren't working, due to the fact of suicides of young students, and multiple school shootings by students and former students.

I think there should be a federal law that, on the first day of school, in every school, that the first period be an assembly addressing bullying and hate, the school's policy on it, and the consequences. Those policies should involve the parents immediately. There should never be another student suicide or school shooting.
