Laura Lapointe: Lapointe announcing candidacy for register of deeds

I am announcing my candidacy for reelection as Belknap County register of deeds.

Serving as register is much more than holding an elected position. It is a full-time working role requiring daily involvement, attention to detail, accountability, and a commitment to providing quality service to the people of Belknap County.

The register is responsible for safeguarding the county’s permanent land records by ensuring documents are properly received, recorded, indexed, preserved, and made available to the public. The office also collects and distributes State of New Hampshire real estate transfer taxes, LCHIP and recording fees and prepares required monthly reports for the state and county.

The Belknap County registry of deeds operates with a small staff, and I remain directly involved in its day-to-day work. With nearly six years at the registry, I provide valuable institutional knowledge and continuity while working alongside two relatively new full-time employees.

During my tenure, I have worked to modernize the registry and improve public access to its records. A major records-digitization project was completed under budget, protecting important historical documents while making information easier to locate and access. I have also worked to increase public awareness of deed and property fraud so residents better understand how to monitor and protect their property records.

The register of deeds should be experienced, accessible, fiscally responsible, and actively engaged in the daily operation of the office. I am seeking another term so I may continue preserving Belknap County’s records, strengthening public access, and providing dependable service to its residents.
