Kate Miller: Taking a closer look at the claims of another letter writer

When a letter to the editor by Don Ewing appears in the Sun, there are those readers who automatically nod their heads in agreement. There are others, like me, who automatically discount his claims as unreasoned and likely generated by Q-anon, Fox News and their ilk.

Here are some facts I have researched about his most recent claims:

Cancelling the Keystone Pipeline would, according to the owner, TC Energy Corp., put approximately 1,000 full time workers out of work. There are an additional 10, 400 seasonal jobs effected.

The Senate, under Mitch McConnell, killed the $2,000 stimulus payment in the last Congress. There is a $1,400 direct payment in the COVID bill currently being debated in the Senate, which would not be available to higher-income Americans.

Fuel prices have been going up since April 2020 and were higher than current levels between October 2017 and January 2020, under former President Trump.

Biden’s proposed tax plan increases income taxes on individuals earning more than $400,000 per year, expands the Child and Dependent Care Credit from $3,000 to $8,000, and increases the corporate tax rate. This proposal requires approval by both the House and the Senate.

These facts paint a very different picture than the one painted by Mr. Ewing. We have just come out of four years where facts were irrelevant; let us not continue that method of “reasoning.”
