Johnna Davis: NH GOP has ads full of misinformation, half-truths, lies

It appears some are upset that Belknap County Democrats are organized and fighting back against the propaganda infiltrating Belknap County. Unlike New Hampshire GOP’s ad last week full of misinformation, half-truths, and lies, our messaging is based on bills we’ve been following in Concord. It is, in fact, Democrats who are fighting to keep property taxes low, lower energy costs, protect civil liberties, etc.

Misinformation: “lower taxes and spending.” They did indeed lower taxes, mostly for big businesses and the wealthy by repealing the Business Enterprise and Dividends and Interest taxes. Has this helped the average person pay their bills? Eventually what is taken away will need to be made up for by taking away important services. Lower spending? They gave over $44.9 million in vouchers to private and religious schools in the past three years with little accountability.

Half-truths: “Grow jobs and the economy.” If readers take their word for it, we look like we’re in pretty good shape. The state downshifted $2.7 billion in cash to cities and towns. What they don’t mention is NH received over $1 billion from the American Rescue Plan thanks to our federal delegation. Readers should ask themselves why Joe Kenney inquired about the rainy-day fund in the last Executive Committee meeting.

Lies: “Protect commonsense abortion law.” The GOP sponsored 10 bills over the past three years that would reduce or eliminate a woman’s access to abortion care in New Hampshire, including a 6-week and a 15-day abortion ban. Democrat sponsored bills include repealing a GOP law punishing doctors who perform abortions and a protecting abortion access in the NH Constitution. The bill failed to get the 3/5 votes necessary, mostly along party lines with only nine Republicans voting in favor. Why is the GOP so afraid to put abortion on the ballot?
