Joe Cormier: Petition for acquisition of cemetery at Town Meeting a go

Here's an update on the Moultonborough petition to bring to Town Meeting, the acquisition of property, for a cemetery, at the corner of Ferry and Moultonboro Neck roads. Pursuant to RSA 41:14-a, whereby, in Moultonborough, 3 out of 5 selectboard members can buy property without town approval. The statute also provides 50 registered voters can petition to put the acquisition on the warrant for the next Town Meeting.

The selectboard announced Aug. 27, the first day they could have voted, that the petition succeeded. The question is required to be placed on the warrant of the March 13, 2027, Town Meeting.

Of course, the town buying that property may be a moot issue by then. Those subdivision lots are about to become legal to buy. Namely, once conditions are met and the planning board chair signs the plat, and it is brought to the registry of deeds, the lots can then be sold.

The seller may decide to build homes and sell those on some of the lots, or just sell the individual lots. That's up to the seller. If just the lots are sold, then it is up to the buyer to do what they want to do, complying with state and town regulations and laws.

The cost and the views of lots 2 and 3 were the “bones of contention.” The MLS listings, those used by the Realtors as opposed to those utilized by the general public, like Zillow, were confusing. There was even comment about a boat dock being available in a yacht club that has “first rights of refusal,” but no mention of being part of the deed?

Anyway, the town gets to vote next March … if the properties are still available. May the seller get what they can get.
