James Veverka: Israel, US have no respect for international law unless it suits them

Last Friday, the International Court of Justice put another nail in the coffin of the Israeli apartheid. It ruled: That the state of Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful. That the state of Israel is under an obligation to end its unlawful occupation of Palestinian territory as rapidly as possible. That the state of Israel must cease immediately all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers from occupied Palestinian territory. That the state of Israel has the obligation to make reparation for damage caused to all natural and legal persons concerned in the occupied Palestinian territory. That all UN states are under obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence of the state of Israel in occupied Palestinian territory, and not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of state of Israel in occupied Palestinian territory. That international organizations, including the United Nations, are under obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence of the state of Israel in occupied Palestinian territory. That the UN, and specifically the General Assembly, which requested this opinion, and the Security Council should consider the precise modalities and further action required to bring to an end as rapidly as possible the unlawful presence of the state of Israel in occupied Palestinian territory.

International response has been positive and we can expect more disciplinary actions. On the other hand, Israel and the present U.S. government, Democrats and Republicans, have no respect for international law unless it suits them. When Russia bombs a Ukrainian hospital, they shout "war criminals." But when Israel massacres thousands of innocents in hospitals, schools, homes, and safe-zones, we get excuses while more bombs are shipped to kill mostly more innocent civilians.
