Geoffrey Burrows: Vote yes for lights at the field in Meredith

The Inter-Lakes Co-Operative School District, comprising the towns of Meredith. Center Harbor and Sandwich, was created in 1963. This partnership is now 63 years old. The purpose of the co-operative is to provide educational opportunity for the children of the three towns. Every generation has made decisions to solve issues in their time that also enhanced educational opportunity for succeeding generations.

That was the motivation for Charles G. Burrows to serve on the Sandwich School Board beginning as a 30-year-old single parent of three young sons in 1954.

Throughout the 1950s he accepted the challenge to find the right course to deliver educational opportunity in the modern world to the children of Sandwich, resulting in the forming of Inter-Lakes Co-Operative. Charles, at age 39, was chosen as the first chairman of the new school board in 1963. Charles believed that opportunity for all children, not just the star of the varsity basketball team, to participate in sports was an important component of a quality education.

The Grandfathers are men of accomplishment, but unassuming, in their careers in sport. They lived a life in sport that little boys and girls dream about as they play on Burrows Field. The Grandfathers only agenda is to enhance the opportunity for all Inter-Lakes students to enjoy sports.

Placing lights on Burrows Field is a one-time investment that will deliver opportunity for years to come. Solar panels began as a “wish” which morphed into reality. The curse of cost was cut by government grants, etc. So too the cost of the lights will be cut by the money the Grandfathers has raised. It is now our challenge to enhance the opportunity for all students of the Inter-Lakes community to enjoy Burrows field. Please support Article Six at the annual school meeting.
