To The Daily Sun,

The federal government has “shut down.” Most people didn’t notice; most people’s lives are unaffected. Social Security, health care, food stamps, etc., are unaffected. All essential government services continue, workers will be paid when the government reopens.

Congress is supposed to pass annual funding bills. If one year’s funding ends before the next year’s funding bills pass, Congress typically passes continuing resolutions (CRs) to authorize spending until the needed spending bill(s) are negotiated and passed.

The 2026 funding bills weren’t passed before the 2025 fiscal year ended on Sept. 30.

On a bipartisan basis the House of Representatives passed a CR to continue spending at the 2025 level while Congress finishes negotiating and passing the 2026 funding bills.

Sen. Schumer led most Senate Democrats to defeat this CR and close down the government.

Rather than negotiating desired items in the 2026 funding, Sen. Schumer demands adding $1.5 trillion in new spending to the CR to reopen the government. The $1.5T is to fund the demands of radical, far left Democrats.

Sen. Chuck Schumer opposed previous government shutdowns and supported previous CRs to keep the government open. Sen. Schumer is making these ridiculous demands fearing that otherwise the radical leftist Democrats will replace him as minority leader and that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will defeat him when he runs for reelection.

The government is shutdown because Senate Democrats care more about their radical, far-left agenda than about the impact on people and programs affected by the “shutdown.”
