To The Daily Sun,
As our nation celebrates America’s 250th birthday, it is worth reflecting on what has made this country a beacon of freedom, opportunity, and hope for nearly two and a half centuries. Our history has never been perfect, but generation after generation has worked to leave America stronger than they found it.
This summer, as millions of visitors arrive for FIFA events, they will return home with stories about our country. Some will remember our mountains, lakes, our national parks, and our welcoming communities. Others will remember our innovation, generosity, and freedom. Their impression of America will come not from headlines, but from the people they meet.
Watching the matches, one thought keeps coming to mind: successful teams don’t spend 90 minutes arguing with one another. They keep their eye on the ball.
Perhaps that’s a lesson worth remembering.
Healthy debate has always been part of the American story, and it should be. But somewhere along the way, too many of us have begun treating fellow Americans as opponents instead of neighbors. We have become very good at pointing out what is wrong while too often forgetting to celebrate what is still remarkably right.
Patriotism does not require believing America is flawless. It simply means loving your country enough to help make it better while never losing sight of the blessings we already have.
As the world watches America this summer, perhaps the greatest goal we can score isn’t on a soccer field at all. Perhaps it’s remembering that despite our differences, we’re all playing for the same team: America. That would be a birthday worthy of our nation’s first 250 years.
