We are making a change to our opinion lineup. Beginning this month, we will no longer carry the syndicated columns of Robert Reich, Rachel Marsden and Victor Davis Hanson. When we added them, we valued their brilliance and eloquence in articulating their respective points of view.
Like so much else in our national conversation, however, their columns have devolved into shrill partisan diatribe. This isn't unique to them; it reflects how our entire discourse has become louder, angrier, and less human.
Democrats warn of an authoritarian threat to democracy, invoking comparisons to Hitler and fascism. Republicans brand their opponents as communists and radical socialists. This endless cycle of dehumanization is the real existential threat to our democracy.
Our goal on these pages is to foster a more thoughtful and constructive conversation — one grounded in understanding rather than outrage.
David Shribman will remain a steady presence, offering historical perspective and measured insight. We are also adding Salena Zito, a reporter whose work exemplifies listening to people where they live and telling their stories with genuine respect and curiosity — a vital contrast to the shouting match.
We hope these voices will help us restore perspective, civility, and a sense of shared purpose — qualities our democracy needs now more than ever.
