WOLFEBORO — Authorities have released the name of a man who drowned in Lake Winnipesaukee on the night of Jan. 1.

Andre Cassiano Rubert, age 20, of Framingham, Massachusetts, was one of four people who attempted to kayak and canoe out to Grant Island from the shores of Wolfeboro the night of New Year's Day. Both the canoe and kayak capsized during the attempt.

A friend of the paddlers attempted rescue with a canoe, managing to save three of the individuals. Rubert, however, succumbed to the 38-degree water and drowned. His body was recovered that night by Wolfeboro Fire Rescue and Fish and Game. Neither Rubert nor any of the other paddlers were wearing life jackets.

According to an obituary published in the Framingham Source, Rubert was born in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil and was a graduate from Keefe Technical High School in Framingham. He was an apprentice with DC Electric in Hopkinton with hopes of becoming a journeyman electrician. His family will hold a memorial service on Jan. 9 in Framingham.
