GILMANTON — Republican state Rep. Michael Maloney has resigned from his seat in the New Hampshire House of Representatives.

Maloney, who represented Belknap County District 5, which is made up of the towns of Alton and Gilmanton, resigned effective Friday, Oct. 13.

House Communications Director James Rivers said that Maloney's resignation letter was brief and did not set forth a reason for the resignation. Rivers said that legislators who were friends of Maloney told him that Maloney was moving to Maine.

Maloney was elected to the legislature in 2016 and was the leading vote getter in District 5 with 3,287 votes. Peter Varney of Alton was also elected from District 5 with 3,073 votes in the same election.

Maloney's resignation leaves the Belknap County Delegation with only 16 members. The other vacancy on the 18-member delegation is a result of the death of Rep. Donald Flanders (R-Laconia). A special election will be held to fill that vacancy.

Maloney has ben absent from eight of the 12 Belknap County Delegation meetings held this year. He attended the first three meetings in January and the last one he attended was on March 10. The delegation has met six times since then.
