Joseph Mack, 102

TILTON — Joseph “Joe” Mack, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, at 102 years of age, following a life rich with family, friends, travel and military service.

He was born on July 19, 1924, in Bronx, New York, to Joseph and Josephine (née Altman) Mack. Following his school years in the Bronx, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a radio operator in the Northern France campaign in 1944.

Following the war, Joe graduated from Springfield College, Massachusetts, in 1949, with a physical education degree, and also a degree of physical therapy in 1950, from the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

Joseph went on to become the chief of physical therapy at Mercy Hospital, later to be referred to as Berkshire Rehab, in Springfield, Massachusetts, from 1951 to his retirement in 1986, working for 35 years in a job he loved.

It was in Springfield that he met and married his wife Helen “Ree” Healey in 1948, and raised two sons, Daniel and Michael.

Joe did volunteer work in Springfield, at the Ronald McDonald House for many years and also worked as a handyman helping anyone and everyone fix things around their homes. He loved to tinker and was a loving, friendly presence wherever he went.

In the years following the death of his wife Ree in 1995, Joe met Phyllis Weintraub while visiting friends in Florida. They shared a wonderful 25 years together residing in Peaks Island, Maine, in the summer and Treasure Island, Florida, in the winter.

When Phyllis passed in 2023, Joe moved to New Hampshire, to live with his son Daniel in Laconia. He later moved to the NH Veterans Home in May 2025.

He is survived by his sons, Daniel (Rosemary) Mack of Laconia, and Michael (Gina) Mack of Springfield, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Collin, Ryan and Brendan; and six great-grandchildren, Rozalyn, Braydi, Violet, Patick, William and Greyson; as well as nephews and several nieces. He also leaves behind Phyllis’ son Marc (Amy) Weintraub, who he was very close to, as well as their children Caroline and Jeremiah, who he was very fond of.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Joe and Phyllis’ close friends Bill and Sue Makin, Dick and Gunnel Reed, and Roxanne and Jeff Marks, who were always at hand for fun times and support both in Maine, and Florida.

A graveside service will be held in the family plot in Springfield, Massachusetts, at a later date.
