TILTON — The New Hampshire Department of Transportation will be installing additional stop signs and road markings at the intersection of Winter Street, Colby Road, and Clark Road near New Hampshire Veterans Home on Wednesday Oct. 1.  The work is weather dependent and will require lane closure from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The work is to convert the intersection from existing two-way stop to an all-way stop control — which means all approaching roads have a stop sign. The goal of this work is to improve overall driver safety while also reducing motor vehicle collisions.

Drivers should see portable message boards notifying them of the imminent change in the traffic pattern. The message boards will remain for approximately one month after the all-way stop is implemented to emphasize the new traffic control.

Key changes will include stop signs for the Clark Road eastbound approach to Winter Street and the Colby Road westbound approach to Winter Street. Each will also have a sign that says “New” along with “Stop Ahead” warning signs and “Stop” line pavement markings.

All four stop signs at the intersection will receive signs that say “All Way.”

The Federal Highway Administration and Roadway Safety Foundation recognizes all-way stop intersection conversions as effective “lifesaving projects,” with data showing a significant decrease in motor vehicle fatalities and serious injuries at rural intersections.
