Ribbon-cutting at Meredith Adaptive Paddling Launch marks new chapter in town’s commitment to supporting residents

MEREDITH — Dozens of area residents attended a grand ribbon-cutting event on June 27, at Leavitt Park in Meredith to celebrate the installation of the first ADA-compliant Adaptive Paddling Launch in the Lakes Region. The event marked a new chapter in the town of Meredith’s long-term commitment to supporting good health and excellent quality of life for its residents.

Main elements of the Launch include a wide, stable platform with a dock connected to the shore by a heavy aluminum gangway. Able-bodied and “differently-abled” paddlers of all ages can use the system to get onto Lake Winnipesaukee more easily and safely in a kayak, canoe, stand-up paddleboard, or in certain other paddle craft.

Located at the end of Leavitt Park Road in Meredith, the new Launch will be available for use on a seasonal basis. Parking regulations will apply, as posted at the entrance to Leavitt Park.

The Launch is the result of more than four years of work by a committee of volunteers who, under the auspices of the town Parks & Recreation Department, raised most of the funds and secured the administrative support needed to bring the project to life. Paula Wanzer of Meredith chaired the committee.

Group paddling events and programs are planned for paddlers who wish to participate in the fun of exploring such destinations as Becky’s Garden, the Beavers Islands, the Swallow Boathouse, Black Cat Island Bridge, and more — all of which are within a few hours of round-trip paddling from Leavitt Park.

The Meredith Adaptive Paddling Launch is the only ADA-compliant, fully adaptive paddling launch system in the Lakes Region, and one of just a handful in the state of New Hampshire.
