To The Daily Sun,
As parents, protecting our children’s future is a top priority, yet many are unaware that their children’s identities are extremely vulnerable to theft. With nearly one million cases of child identity fraud each year, this issue can no longer be overlooked. That’s why Sens. Maggie Hassan and John Cornyn are tackling this growing threat by reintroducing the Credit Freeze for Kids Act.
Each year, one in every 50 children fall victim to identity theft, leading to nearly $1 billion in credit card fraud. Unfortunately, the current process for protecting children’s credit is complex and time consuming, leaving families exposed. If passed, the Credit Freeze for Kids Act could save families thousands of dollars in fraud and help prevent long-term financial struggles caused by stolen identities.
This bill will streamline the process by allowing parents to contact just one of the three major credit bureaus to initiate a freeze, with that bureau notifying the others, thus minimizing risk of financial harm.
I applaud Sen. Hassan for her bipartisan leadership in making it easier for parents to protect our children’s financial security. Identity theft is a threat to all families, and this legislation ensures our children’s future remains safe.
