To The Daily Sun,

For over 40 years, I have lived in this city, and for a good portion of that time I was a landlord. That experience has given me an inside view of the rental housing market and the way subsidized housing programs affect it.

What troubles me most is the stagnation I’ve witnessed. Subsidized housing was meant to be a step up — a temporary support while individuals or families get back on their feet. Instead, our stairs are broken. It has too often become a way of life, passed down from generation to generation causing an undue demand for our vulnerable population today legitimately needing help. I’ve spoken with people who admit they cannot make over a certain dollar amount for fear of losing their housing. I have even seen couples choose not to marry, simply to keep their vouchers.
