To The Daily Sun,
On Thursday, the House approved and I co-sponsored, an important piece of legislation, House Bill 592 (HB 592), to reform our bail system in New Hampshire. This legislation is an important step toward ending the criminal revolving door that has affected our neighborhoods and communities. Countless law enforcement officials across the state know that this measure will save lives and asked for it to be implemented. Our Gov. Kelly Ayotte ran on bail reform and pushed hard for this bill to pass. One key figure that did not sign onto a letter of support from eight other mayors is Laconia's Mayor Andrew Hosmer. This raises concerns about his stance on public safety. This also makes me question the leadership in Laconia or lack thereof.
The purpose of HB 592 is to address the issues with the current bail system, which often allows individuals with a history of criminal behavior to be released back into the community too easily. This cycle can lead to repeated offenses, as individuals are often not held accountable for their actions. The bill seeks to ensure that those who pose a danger to society are detained while awaiting trial. This will enhance the safety of our neighborhoods. With the backing from law enforcement, it is clear that there is widespread agreement on the need for these changes, making the lack of support from Mayor Hosmer particularly puzzling. Why isn't the safety of Laconia residents a priority to him?
I've always maintained a respectful and genuine working relationship with Mayor Hosmer, so I can't help but wonder what's really behind his reluctance to openly back a measure as crucial as this? The safety of Laconia residents shouldn't be a partisan issue; it should be a priority. Citizens deserve leaders who prioritize their safety and interests above all else.
