To The Daily Sun,

On Sept. 17, 1796, George Washington delivered his farewell address. This is arguably the most important document in United States history. In it, he shared his observations of how We the People should protect our precious gift of democracy.

Much of the document is a warning of the dangers of partisanship and extremism. His words were prophetic. Currently extremism is overwhelming both parties, alienating the 70% of those who either identify as politically moderate or undeclared, effectively leaving them without a voice.

We saw this intimately in our county where an extremist group, one representing less than 2% of the electorate, the Free State Project, was able to take control, putting Gunstock and our various county agencies at risk. Similar disruptions occurred in Grantham and Croydon.

It is the goal of the FSP to stage a coup d’etat of our government, forcing their idea of liberty on the whole of us, a view quite different from that of our founding fathers in which, as James Madioson wrote, ambition will counter ambition. While they have the right to their point of view, they do not have the right to force it on the 98%. It is to the credit of the citizens of Belknap County, Croydon, and Grantham that they rose up, united, to take back control.

Unfortunately, the FSP has effectively taken control of the Statehouse, something that should concern all of us.

It has been my honor to represent residents in Concord these past four years. Inspired by our first president, I promote unity and the belief that as part of being Americans, we are encouraged to differ in our thoughts. Yet, we solve our complex problems by coming together as a united whole. I would ask for support in helping me continue this message.
