To The Daily Sun,
Following Donald Trump’s recent unhinged news conference, it dawned on me why Vice President Kamala Harris, with running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, are taking our nation by storm.
It’s the pair’s brand of upbeat politics: Joy, hope and optimism.
Of course their crusade toward a better future and more perfect union does not guarantee a victorious turnout on Election Day. However, it’s added a significant level of excitement, conjuring a brilliantly winnable vision in a presidential race now defined as Trump’s to lose.
Meanwhile, Trump and the weird Sen. J.D. Vance personify darkness. The dour pair remind us frequently how ugly, weak and stupid we are. They and their MAGA disaffected are a flinty, humorless bunch, angrily unhappy about everything. Theirs is a rudderless energy devoid of the “human touch.”
Thankfully, most Americans favor light. Let’s face it, freedom and betterment are in our DNA. We gravitate toward national leaders who exhibit joy, optimism, humor, as showcased in historical presidential campaigns.
Think about it. Ronald Reagan's relatable humor and positivity contrasted with Jimmy Carter's “malaise” mindset, leading to Reagan's victory. In 1992, Bill Clinton's charm and engaging manner overshadowed George H.W. Bush’s perceived indifference. Clinton plied it again in 1996 against a dull and humorless Bob Dole.
Similarly, George W. Bush's affable nature resonated more favorably with voters in 2000 than Al Gore's perceived stiffness and he capitalized on it four years later to defeat “flip-flopping” John Kerry.
Meanwhile, the youthful Barack Obama, sunny and future facing, easily defeated his stolid opponents, John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Harris-Walz are decidedly onward and upward. Just observe the smiles, the flurry of loving hugs and kisses at Harris-Walz rallies.
Then watch Trump. No smiles, no hugs, no kisses. He can't.
