To The Daily Sun,Â
I would like to clarify a couple points raised by Peter Kirk’s letter on March 5 regarding Article 29 of the Gilford town election.
First, there is no cost to the town. The Energy Committee will be staffed by volunteers who have expertise and/or interest in energy efficiency. New technology, and sometimes just old-fashioned air-sealing and insulation, can help our neighbors and our town save money on utility bills.
Second, towns across New Hampshire have Energy Committees. These committees have investigated the cost effectiveness of a range of projects, including solar, lighting upgrades and other new technologies that have saved their communities thousands of dollars and helped mitigate exposure to skyrocketing fossil-fuel-dependent utility rates.
Furthermore, new financing tools, utility programs, grants, and some remaining rebates are not always easy to navigate — for consumers or the selectboard. These programs require in-depth expertise, and the selectboard likely doesn’t have the time to develop it.
Article 29 won’t cost the town anything. Vote yes on Article 29 for savings on energy bills for Gilford (our taxpayers), residents, and local businesses.
