L.J. Schaffnit: GOP shows character, honesty, integrity, truth no longer required for political leadership

While one conservative contributor waits for the return of the “old Democratic Party,” he fails to recognize the destruction of the “old Republican Party.” The most conservative of all conservative values was once its fidelity to the Constitution; today’s Conservatives have chosen to abandon this and other American values to serve a single man. The GOP has morphed into the MAGA Party of Trump and the “Big Lie.”

Less than four years ago, Donald Trump incited an attack on the United States Capitol in order to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power for the first time in our nation’s history, he has been impeached twice, found liable for sexual assault, convicted of 34 felonies, and conservatives are desperate for voters to forget it all.

Prominent MAGA/Republican leaders, to include the Speaker of the House, have shown that character, honesty, integrity, and truth are no longer required for political leadership and embrace election conspiracies as their route to political glory. They have no principled core other than demanding total allegiance to Trump.

For months, Trump has continuously sowed doubt on the election system ahead of Nov.5 and continues to claim falsely that the 2020 election was stolen. He will not commit to accepting the election results unless he feels it is a “fair and legal and good election” — we all witnessed how that played out in 2020. MAGA/Republicans, in lockstep with Trump, are hedging or dodging when asked whether they’ll accept the results of the 2024 elections. The once GOP has demonstrated little intention of conceding an election loss on Nov. 5, prompting concerns that the outcome will be fought in the courts, and not determined by the ballots cast by the American people.
