Alison James' letter to the editor of June 24 challenged the constitutional foundations of our republic. She wrote, “judges have no jurisdiction to block Trump when he is our duly elected president.” But part of the genius of our constitutional design is its systems of checks and balances. The check that the judicial branch exercises on the power of the president is to interpret the Constitution’s checks on the actions of any president to ensure that the president's actions are consistent with the Constitution. Without such checks, the president alone decides both the actions to be taken and their constitutionality. In short, there would be no independent check on a president. The last time that was true in North America, we had a king.
