To The Daily Sun,
I am writing to express my concern regarding Mayor Mike Bordes’ dysfunctional leadership during city council meetings. I believe there is a pressing need for greater decorum, collegiality and mutual respect. Rudeness from either the audience or council members should not be tolerated.
Effective leadership should be rooted in building coalitions, managing disagreements and logical persuasion, rather than “gotcha” moments, punitive behavior and self-promotion. Additionally, it is unclear why individuals who are not residents of Laconia are allowed to address the council, other than to advance the mayor’s political agenda.
In order to promote transparency and effective governance, I urge the council to strictly adhere to Laconia’s own written Rules of Procedure which include Robert’s Rules of Order.
