To The Daily Sun,

I’ll be running for Moultonborough School Board again. The reason is the same as last year. Moultonborough’s English and math proficiencies are 58% and 42% respectively. Here is a link to the NH Department of Education. (tinyurl.com/4h3tya4b)

If you go back to 2011 Moultonborough’s English and math proficiencies were 82% and 67% respectively. They dropped between 2011 and 2018. Since then, proficiencies have remained flat. Why?

Proficiencies are not the only issue. Costs of education have become a national issue. Moultonborough is no exception. Cost per student (CPS) last year was $34,375, which is double the national average of $17,090. (tinyurl.com/zjfpxch8)

I have read letters to the editor that the solution to poor proficiencies is more money. I strongly disagree. The Bedford school district is a good example. Their English and math proficiencies are 79% and 71% respectively and their CPS is $19,651. (tinyurl.com/4v775kht)

So, what is the solution? Simply put, make education a priority. Everyone on the current school board will “claim” that is their highest priority, but the numbers show otherwise. I attended the online state training outlining responsibilities of school board members. No. 1 was ensuring ALL students get the best education possible. No. 2 was ensuring the school superintendent is a good steward of taxpayer money. In my opinion the current board is doing neither.

I invite all concerned Moultonborough residents to attend the “Meet the Candidates” event on Friday at 5:30 p.m. on March 6 at the old Lion’s Club. I will explain how Moultonborough can get back to the proficiencies it once had.

Whether you have a student in school or not, please get out and vote on March 10. Pick up an absentee ballot today if you will be out of town. March 10 is closer than you think. My email is Bjenket@gmail.com.
