LACONIA — What was once basically a storage facility on Main Street is now a modern laundromat, with 52 top-of-the-line washing and drying units and a welcoming atmosphere, seven days a week.
Located near the intersection of Main and Union Avenue, Quick Spin is the brainchild of Stephanie Winter and Kevin Hutchinson, who wanted to see the unsightly location converted to something more community-focused and accessible — especially downtown.
With its beautiful wood finishes and clean environment, Quick Spin is becoming just that.
“We just wanted to bring, like I said, something really nice to the community, and just something that is going to be here forever,” Winter said Thursday. “We finally decided that the community needed something. It's growing, and we wanted to kind of be a part of that growth.
“It's going to be a long time thing.”
The laundromat offers 30- to 50-pound washers, and rare 100-pound dryers, making it easy to wash everything, from delicates to comforters.
One unique aspect at Quick Spin is their payment methods. Customers can use QR codes and a mobile phone app to complete washing and drying cycles right from their device.
Gone are the days of buying quarters from a customer service desk to wash laundry.
Dexter Pay, which can be scanned individually at each unit or via one of the many posters hanging in the laundromat, makes the chore of laundry much easier and provides the user total control. A smart dashboard on each unit highlights the selections made and greets each unique user by name. Rewards are also offered through the app.
“What I really like is normally you go and you take your credit card, right? And every time you swipe your credit card, you're getting that 3% fee. Dexter Pay only does a dollar,” Winter said. “You can load $100 on there and it's a dollar. You could load $10 on there and it's a dollar.
"So there's no, like, 3% thing that seems to eat up everyone's bank account.”
There are a handful of employees who can complete wash, dry and fold services, as well as welcome customers. The laundromat also provides commercial jobs and pick-up and delivery.
Included in the staff is Muriel Turgeon, who was busy folding laundry Thursday. Winter joked that many people come to visit Turgeon, “needing a therapy session.”
A kids station, complete with coloring, stickers and pint-sized laundry carts, helps entertain the young ones — another community aspect of Quick Spin.
And kids helped play a major part in the business’ branding endeavors. Winters’ sister is an educator in Florida, and tasked her fourth grade students with a logo design assignment, as well as using the floor plan to create the most ideal layout possible.
The logo featured on their door today? Yep, designed by the youth working on a real-skills application project at school.
“She was absolutely ecstatic,” Winter said.
Quick Spin Laundromat is open 5 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. A grand opening will be held in the spring.
