To the editor:

After reading Jenny Watson’s letter I want to support her findings.

As a candidate for city council last year I expressed the desire to hold the school board accountable. In other words: show me what we are doing with the money that equals education improvements — what justifies that expense — and what do we expect for results? We have witnessed a proposed new middle school building for $26 million which was reduced to $23 million that the school board said would be okay that now has been said to be $28 million!

Education is about what is taught and who is teaching that subject, not mortar and brick. There are those who question the potential loss of state aid, and now we understand that the reason for the reduction is due to a lower number of students in our school system. So what is it that some refuse to grasp — less numbers mean a reduction in aid and in school budget revenue? For those who can afford more taxes for school budgets and new buildings the answer is not to demean those who cannot — just make that extra contribution above your regular property tax bill.

The finance officer at city hall could setup a separate fund for those contributions.
